Het Grote Onbekende (The Great Unknown) in 2019

The point of departure was a photographic portrait of students at Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz. What do you think about when looking at someone you don't know? What judgments do you make? Do you look at their appearance, or do you attempt to see beyond their skin and hair? How do you give a stranger a story? The writers belonging to Meeuw Jonge Schrijvers wrote a story based on this photograph. What kind of life do their peers lead who see a future for themselves at sea? The results of this creation process – and a meeting between the makers and the Willem Barentsz students – could be seen at Oerol 2019 and at Explore the North 2019.

Het Grote Onbekende (The Great Unknown) in 2020

From suikerbrood to bike saddle and from trash can to Stryper Wyfke: In 2020, Het Grote Onbekende is an ode to objects that faithful Oerol fans will have to miss this year, since the festival has had to go entirely online. Het Grote Onbekende already featured in 2020 at Oerol's Het Imaginaire Eiland (The Imaginary Island), as well as at the Westerkerk in Leeuwarden.
